Insert Spillway Rating Curve

Geometry Editor > 2D Connection Data Editor.

Click on the Outlet RC button.

In the new window we have to insert the following data:

1. The Rating Curve Name (usually you can use the name of its dam).

2. The position of the center of the spillway structure along the dam stationing.

3. The spillway width (that, of course, can be different from the dam width).

5. This table defines the hydraulic behavior of the spillway or outlet. It links upstream water level to discharge.

6. The Plot Curve button simply shows a graph of the table in Point 5.

4. This option controls what variable drives the flow through the spillway. You must choose whether the outlet flow depends on:

  • Water Surface Elevation (for spillways you have to select this one)
  • Flow.

This choice defines the physical meaning of your rating curve.

When Water Surface is selected, the rating curve is interpreted as:

Q = f(Elevation of Upstream Water Surface)

This means: The higher the water level upstream, the larger the flow through the spillway. This is how real spillways, weirs, and dam crests behave.

When Flow is selected, the curve is interpreted as:

The output can be expressed as a function of the input:

Qout = f(Qin)

This means: The outlet flow is controlled by an imposed inflow, not by the water level. Even if the reservoir level rises, the spillway will not automatically discharge more unless the inflow changes.

This mode is used only for:

  • controlled structures

  • gates, valves, pumps

  • artificial flow transformers

It should not be used for real spillways or dam overtopping.
