- Open the page of the streamgage, for example: Mohawk River Near Utica NY - USGS Water Data for the Nation
- Download the continuous data (gage height and discharge) for three storm of record events at the Utica USGS Gage. Start with 5 days before to 5 days after the event, but make sure the flow conditions at the start date and end date are near normal.
- Save data in excel files and make plots for each event.
- Create a dimensionless hydrograph for each event
- Determine peak discharge for the event and divide each discharge value by the peak.
- When you download the data, pick a point along the hydrograph where you think the event begins. This will be time 0. Then instead of showing Date & Time values, show the change in time relative to that start. From that point, calculate out the time values for each discharge measurements relative to the 0. For example if the data comes every 15 minutes, the time values would go 0 hours, 0.25 hours , 0.5 hours , 0.75 hours, etc. Then find the time in hours that corresponds to the peak discharge you determined before. Then similar to what we did for the discharge, divide each time value by the Time at Peak.
- Plot the dimensionless hydrograph for each event
